Well, summer's over. Now that school is back in session, I can use words like "personification" again. In poetry and other forms of literature, when an author wants to give an idea or an object some personality and life, he might talk about it as though it were a person. This is called personification, and it's exactly what is done in much of the book of Proverbs. Wisdom is personified as a great teacher, and foolishness is personified as an adulteress. Chapter 8 has some wonderful images to share about Lady Wisdom!
"All the words of my mouth are just; none of them is crooked or perverse." Wow! That's quite a statement. I bet many of us know a lot of people who wouldn't be able to say that. However, that's what Lady Wisdom says. We should try to be like Lady Wisdom, guarding the gateway of our mouth, being careful of what comes out of it. We are reminded of the old saying, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."
"Counsel and sound judgment are mine; I have understanding and power." It seems that many people are interested in being powerful and influential. People find power in different places: politics, sports, money, fame, etc. The Bible tells us that we should first look for power and understanding by attaining Wisdom. If we spend time with Lady Wisdom, some of that understanding and power will rub off on us.
"I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in His presence..." Lady Wisdom knows where she should spend time. While she has many choices of things to do to fill her time, she realizes that the best thing to do is to walk side by side with God and spend time with Him. She enjoys spending time with Him and seeing what He is doing in the world. We are wise when we recognize that the best thing we can do is to spend time with God.
These are just three of the wonderful personifications found in Proverbs 8. We can learn a lot by studying Lady Wisdom and trying to be more like her! You might want to take a moment to read the rest of Proverbs 8, and see how you can allow Lady Wisdom to influence your life.
